Few spelling mistakes - readers are able to decode misspelled words easily. Writer uses punctuation consistently in the story.

Some spelling mistakes - readers may need reread sections to figure out misspelled words. Punctuation is present in most areas of the story.

Writer uses mostly invented spelling. Punctuation is not present in all areas of the story.

Writer is relying on pictures with labeling to convey meaning in the text. Words are short and spelled using invented spelling. Punctuation is missing throughout most of the story.
