Poor

The product is practically unreadable, following few of the necessary standard practices.

1 pts

Fair

The product is generally comprehensible, demonstrating basic understanding of most of the criteria addressed.

3 pts

Good

The product is of above average quality, demonstrating a working knowledge of the criteria.

4 pts

Excellent

The product is of exceptional quality, demonstrating the highest command of the criteria.

5 pts

Organization

Story features an effective beginning, middle, and end, establishing mood, setting, and characterization early on with follow-through.
Unscorable

The amount of writing is insufficient to determine if an attempt was made to create an organized beginning, middle, and end.
Poor

Minimal evidence of organization is apparent. Characters are not developed (or even distinguishable), setting is not described with consistency, mood is not established.
Fair

Consistent evidence of organization is apparent. Characters are mentioned (though not fully developed) and generally distinguishable. Setting is mentioned, but not detailed enough to create mood.
Good

Story is structured to effectively diagram beginning, middle, and end. Characters are unique, described in detail, and experience change from beginning to end. Setting is appropriate to demonstrate mood.
Excellent

Writing details an organized story which uses each part to effectively transition the reader from beginning to end. Characters possess depth and undergo significant change by the story's conclusion. Setting is carefully crafted to affect the characters in a logical manner.
Presentation of Conflict

Story presents conflict adequate to carry the plot, possessing rising action, climax, and resolution.
Unscorable

The amount of writing is insufficient to determine if an attempt was made to develop conflict within the work.
Poor

Conflict is addressed either too briefly or too late in the story to have an impact. Conflict presented does not seem to drive the plot or affect the characters' actions, beliefs, etc.
Fair

Conflict is addressed throughout, but does not seem to drive the plot. Absence of rising action, climax, or resolution is apparent.
Good

Conflict affects the characters beliefs/actions through rising action, climax, and to the resolution.
Excellent

Conflict is the unifying element of the story, creating, not lagging, behind the plot. Logical climax and resolution result.
Language Conventions

Story demonstrates high command of descriptive, stylistic language free of mechanical errors in spelling and tense consistency.
Unscorable

The writing is illegible or incomprehensible.
Poor

Language used is of poor vocabulary. Word choice is inappropriate. Sentence structure is not varied (usually consisting of fragments or run-ons). Spelling errors detract too much from the content.
Fair

Language used is of adequate quality. Spelling errors generally do not detract too much from the story, however, sentence structure and tense consistency lead to confusion.
Good

Language is of above average quality. Writing is generally free of errors which could confuse readers. Some minor spelling/word choice errors are present, but not severe.
Excellent

Language is of superb quality. Writing demonstrates high command of purpose and audience. Various techniques are used to present information in a clear, strategic manner.
