Counting Beats and Rhythm Counting Beats and Rhythm The Task: Students were given a writing rhythms worksheet. They were previously instructed that counting rhythms involved counting beats. The worksheet had 2 beats in each measure. Students were to complete their own composition using the notation provided. The 3 notation symbols all equaled one count a piece. Students were to fill each measure up with 2 beats using only quarter notes, eighth notes, or quarter rests. Beat	Poor Student did not understand the concept of beat. Student was unable to count beats.	Fair Student had a concept of beat but did not execute properly. Student could not count beats within composition clearly.	Excellent Student executed beat and rhythm correctly. Student was able to count rhythm and beat correctly. Student was able to explain and count composition.
Presentation	Poor Student did not write notation properly. Teacher was unable to tell which notation symbols were present throughout piece.	Fair Student wrote notation properly but it was not done in a neat manner.	Excellent Student wrote notation neat and clear. Notation was written clear and concise.
