Introduction	Poor Topic sentence is missing	Fair Topic sentence is adequate, but lacks an appropriate character assertion.	Good Topic sentence makes an assertion about the character	Excellent Well developed topic sentence that engages the reader and makes an assertion about the character personality.
Support	Poor Lacking in specific evidence.	Fair Includes at least one concrete detail and one statement of commentary for each concrete detail.	Good contains some concrete details, and support for the character assertion.	Excellent contains concrete details, quotes from the story which support the character assertion. Includes statements of commentary for each concrete detail.
Coherence	Poor Rambles with little regard for organization. Lacks transition words.	Fair The organization lacks transition words and a concluding sentence.	Good There is a clear method of organization which includes transition words. A concluding sentence is included.	Excellent clear method of organization including transition words. concluding sentence restates the topic sentence in different terminology.
Sentence Skills	Poor Sentences are confusing and hard to follow.	Fair Incomplete and run-on sentences or sentences that are written with awkward wording. Numerous errors in grammar, conventions or mechanics.	Good Sentences are clear, but may lack variety in structure. Includes some mistakes in grammar, conventions or mechanics that do not distract from understanding.	Excellent Sentences include varied structures and flow easily. There are no errors in grammar, conventions or mechanics.
