Quote Response Journal 
Students are to chose 10-15 significant quotes from any unit of literature currently studied in class. These quotes must be significant in terms of plot, theme, and/or character. Responses should reflect understanding of plot by providing a brief description of background information explaining what is happening in the story in connection with the quote.

4: Exemplary

There are no less than 10-15 selected quotes that are significant in terms of plot, theme, and/or character. Selection of quotes indicate superior comprehension of the intent behind quote choices and understanding of the text.
3: Proficient

There are no less than 10-15 quotes. Majority of chosen quotes are important in terms of plot, theme, and/or character. Selection of quotes indicate a basic understanding of the importance of selecting quotes as well as a basic understanding of the literature.
2: Emerging

There are less than 10 quotes. Another problem or in addition to the minimum requirement of quotes is that there are some quotes that are not important in terms of plot, theme, and/or character.
1: Needs Improvement

There are several areas of concern: either many of the quotes have little connection to plot, theme, and/or character, or the quote selection falls short of the minimum requirements.

All responses to the quotes indicate a superior understanding of the literature as well as the assignment.Background knowledge is provided but only enough to show understanding of the plot. Analysis of quote shows an in depth understanding of the quote's overall importance to the literature.

Majority of the responses to the quotes indicate a basic understanding of the literature and assignment. Background knowledge of the plot is provided as well as an analysis of quote's overall importance to the literature.
2: Emerging

Several responses indicate a fair understanding of the literature. Responses mostly re-state quote or summarize plot.
1: Needs Improvement

Majority of the responses to the quote indicate a weak understanding of the literature. Responses re-states the quote or summarizes the plot but in a confusing and unclear manner.
Neatness/Effort

4: Exemplary

Quotes are professionally packaged and typed in a chart format. Quotes are properly cited.
3: Proficient

Quotes are professionally packaged and either typed or NEATLY handwritten. Assignment may not be in a chart format but is still easy to understand and follow along.
2: Emerging

Quotes are hand written but are sloppy and written in pencil. Format is confusing and hard to follow.
1: Needs Improvement

Very sloppy and hard to read and confusing. The assignment indicates little effort and time.
Spelling/grammar/Word Choice.

4: Exemplary

Superior word choice with no spelling or grammar errors. Titles are italicized or underlined.
3: Proficient

Word choice is appropriate for task with minimal spelling and grammar errors. Titles are underlined or italicized.
2: Emerging

Word choice is only somewhat appropriate. There are some spelling and grammar errors but not enough to confuse the reader.
1: Needs Improvement

Word choice is weak. Many spelling and grammar errors are present, causing confusing in reading and understanding.
