Introductory Paragraph	Novice Intro sentence is weak and complete thesis statement is not included.	Apprentice Intro sentence is weak but thesis statement is included	Practitioner Has intro sentence and thesis statement	Expert Strong intro sentence or two with complete thesis statement as last sentence
3 Reason Paragraphs	Novice The student does not have 3 proper reason paragraphs with supporting evidence that were part of the directions.	Apprentice The student has the 3 paragraphs but does not consistently provide enough supporting evidence	Practitioner The student has written 3 reason paragraphs with only 1 piece of evidence to support each reason	Expert The student has written 3 reason paragraphs, and has provided at least 2 pieces of supporting evidence
Concluding Paragraph	Novice The student did not use the main idea to bring their paper to a close.	Apprentice used the main idea to end the paper, but did not restate the ideas and creatively end with a broad statement	Practitioner Restated the main ideas of their thesis with a closing sentence	Expert Wrote a good summary statement as a restatement of thesis sentence and finished with a broad statement
