Appropriate order

Master

Combinations are given to the class in the correct order, with the dancer being warmed up in a progressive way.
Proficient

Combinations are in order for the most part. Some early exercises may ask too much of the dancer.
Developing

Combinations toward the end are given in a slightly different order, or teachers do not remember combinations or order accurately.
Novice

Teachers do not give the exercises in the correct order, and the dancer is not warmed up appropriately.
Creativity

Master

Teachers create a successful, dynamic new combination with creative por de bras, movements, and transitions.
Proficient

Teachers create a successful combination with some new transitions or movements.
Developing

Teachers create combinations by simply rearranging taught patterns. Combinations make sense and work well, but little ingenuity is used.
Novice

Teachers repeat combinations taught in class. No attempt to create anything new.
Technical skills

Master

Combination created with great attention to quality of movement, body position, and purpose in warming up the dancer. Also uses appropriate head and arm positions and transitions. Demonstrates an excellent understanding of dance style.
Proficient

Combination created with attention to most details of technique. Uses some por de bras and transitionary steps. Exercise is appropriately challenging at the technical level.
Developing

Only some understanding of technical elements (ie. footwork, quality of movements, body positions) demonstrated in combination. Combination does not warm the dancer in the appropriate technical way.
Novice

Although the teacher demonstrates the combination, little attention is paid to details of the steps/positions. Technical elements are missing.
Musicality/Time Signature

Master

Shows a complete understanding of tempo and time signature. Uses more than the required time signatures. Combinations work well in an inventive way with the musicality of the song.
Proficient

Generally accurate in beat, tempo. Required time signatures are used. Combination works well with music.
Developing

Shows a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but falls behind and/or speeds up in places or makes errors in rhythm. However, the combination can still be completed. Does not address time signatures.
Novice

Attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Doesn't follow beat in music. Does not address time signature. Combination does not work with the music.
Construction

Master

Exercises are constructed evenly, with each exercise having a reverse section. Phrases are equally structured to match music.
Proficient

Exercises are constructed well, with most exercises having a reverse section. Some areas may have longer phrases than others, but the exercise works musically.
Developing

Exercises make sense but are not constructed evenly, with odd directions and/or phrases in length. Some exercises do not reverse when they should do so.
Novice

Exercises do not make sense and are hard to follow. Phrases are not clear and distinct. Exercises do not reverse.
Written Component

Master

Group submits a well-written, thorough essay explaining each combination, using correct terminology and correct spelling.
Proficient

Group submits a well-written essay that explains each combination and uses correct terminology. Minor errors in spelling.
Developing

Group submits an essay that documents each combination but contains some errors in terminology and spelling.
Novice

Group does not submit a written component/essay for their project.
