Focus and Coherence	Beyond Level Gives interesting and detailed information about a central topic.	On Level Gives information about a central topic.	Approaching Level Gives information about a topic, but may stray from focus.	Below Level Does not give information about a central topic.
Organization	Beyond Level Presents a main idea that is supported by clear, factual details.	On Level Presents a main idea and supports it with details.	Approaching Level Omits a main idea or offers few supporting details.	Below Level Does not present a main idea supported by details.
Development of Ideas/Word Choice	Beyond Level Thoroughly develops ideas. Uses precise word choice to enhance quality of content.	On Level Attempts to develop ideas. Uses work choice to suit the purpose.	Approaching Level Attempts to develop ideas, but may be inconsistent. Chooses words that are often ill-suited for the purpose.	Below Level Provides little or no development of ideas. Omits or fails to use chosen words correctly.
Voice	Beyond Level Uses a personal voice that adds an inviting, unique tone to the writing.	On Level Uses a personal voice that generally expresses an inviting, unique tone.	Approaching Level Writer has difficulty expressing an inviting, unique tone.	Below Level Writer does not express a personal voice.
Conventions/Sentence Fluency	Beyond Level Writing is almost entirely free of mechanical, grammatical, and spelling errors. Sentence flow from on to the other.	On Level Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and usage are mostly correct. Sentences lead naturally to those that follow.	Approaching Level Makes mistakes that can interfere with the reading of the writing. Sentences flow in a somewhat fluid manner.	Below Level Makes frequent errors in grammar, spelling, mechanics, and usage. Sentences run together or are confusing.
