Create A Colony Student will create a colony addressing the 9 criteria provided in the project guidance sheet. Students will create a Layout of their colony on a standard size poster board or create a model/3D layout and design a flag. Map / Layout of Colony	Low Performance Fails to meet written and verbal criteria; no map key; standard size poster board not used; outline of state not provided.	At or Below Average Fails to meet written or verbal criteria; map key or outline of state missing; not on standard poster board.	At or Above Average meets written and verbal criteria; standard poster board used; map key missing or outline of state missing.	Exemplary Performance Exceeds written or verbal criteria; student shows initiative and imagination. Creates extraordinary poster, model or 3D effect layout.

History of the Colony	Low Performance Written description rambles, does not answer all guidance provided, numerous grammar errors and 5-6 spelling errors.	At or Below Average Written description answers two of the four criteria. 3-5 spelling errors.	At or Above Average Written description answers three of the four criteria. Writing is focused, flows and there are less than 3 spelling errors.	Exemplary Performance Written description answers all of the criteria. Writing is focused, flows and less than two spelling errors.
Flag/Name of Colony	Low Performance No flag or flag not correct size. No written description of symbology of flag. Name of colony reason rambles, has 3-5 spelling errors.	At or Below Average Flag not correct size and written description missing information about colors or symbols. Name of colony not clear grammar and spelling errors.	At or Above Average Flag correct size but missing information about symbols or color. Description of colony name is focused and there are less than 3 spelling errors.	Exemplary Performance Flag correct size, information about colors and symbols is correct. Description of name of colony is logical, clear and concise with no grammar or spelling errors.
Basic Laws for Colony	Low Performance Provided only two-four laws and they do not reflect the written guidance.	At or Below Average Provided four-six laws and they do not reflect the written guidance.	At or Above Average Provided six-eight laws and they reflect the written guidance.	Exemplary Performance Provided the number of laws per guidance and they deomonstrate an understanding of criminal, social or religious behavior.
Leaders/Government	Low Performance List of positions provided with no description of who is in charge, how they are chosen and what supporting positions exist. Numerous spelling and grammar errors.	At or Below Average Description of positions provided but writing is choppy and hard to follow. Not all written or verbal guidance is followed and there are 3 - 5 spelling and grammar errors.	At or Above Average Description of positions is provided. Writing is clear and detail reflects written and verbal guidance. There are 2-4 spelling and/or grammar errors.	Exemplary Performance Description of positions provided per written and verbal guidance. Writing is clear and concise with no spelling or grammar errors.
Social Structure	Low Performance Description of roles of men, women and children only address one of the requirements. Numerous spelling and grammar errors.	At or Below Average Description of roles of men, women and children only address two of the requirements. There are 4-5 spelling and/or grammar errors.	At or Above Average Description of roles of men, women, and children addresses all three req. but writing is poorly organized, hard to follow, there are spelling and grammar errors.	Exemplary Performance Provides well written explanation of roles of men, women and children in the colony. Less than two spelling or grammar errors.
Religion	Low Performance Does not address this requirement.	At or Below Average Addresses the questions but writing is not organized, hard to follow with numerous spelling and grammar errors.	At or Above Average Addresses the questions with a written response that is focused but there are 4-5 spelling or grammar errors.	Exemplary Performance Addresses the questions with a well written response supporting the position taken with less than two spelling and grammar errors.
Jobs	Low Performance Provides a list of two to four jobs but does not explain their importance to the colony; numerous spelling errors.	At or Below Average Provides a list of four to six jobs but does not explain their importance to the colony; 4-5 spelling errors.	At or Above Average Provides the required number of jobs with a written description of why they are important to the colony; contains 4-5 spelling errors.	Exemplary Performance Provides the required number of jobs with well written descriptions that explain their importance to the colony; one to two spelling errors.
Advertisement	Low Performance Item(s) do not meet written criteria and contain numerous spelling errors.	At or Below Average Item(s) provided barely meet written criteria, contain 3-5 spelling errors. No color or has no eye appeal.	At or Above Average Item(s) meet written criteria; contain 2-3 spelling errors, is eye catching.	Exemplary Performance Item(s) exceed written criteria; no spelling errors. Shows originality, colorful and catches your attention.
