Use the following rubric when completing your weekly assignments. Stick to the format and meet all of the criteria in order to earn full credit. Remember: if we have 5 days of school in the week, there will be a current event due on Friday afternoon by 4pm.

The article is current (written in the past 2 weeks) and from a credible source. It is related to a topic or theme discussed in class. The information is easy to understand. The url for the article is posted on the blog along with the assignment (or article is attached if assignment handed in).
Needs some work

The article/source submitted is either not current, from an invalid source, is not pertinent to topic or theme stated in assignment guidelines or source is not posted/attached to assignment.
Unacceptable

The article/source is lacking more than two of the criteria noted in standards for paragraph.
Summary Paragraph

Excellent

Summary is at least 5 sentences long. Includes a complete explanation of event including people, location, and date(s). The main idea of the article is clear and in your own words (quoted if necessary, NOT copied).
Needs some work

Summary is 3-4 sentences long. Includes some explanation of events including people, location and date(s). The main idea and important details lack clarity and accuracy.
Unacceptable

Summary is 1-2 sentences long. Includes very little explanation of events including people, location and date(s). The main idea and details are not written in sentences but are simply listed or are copied directly from the article.
Opinion/Reflection Paragraph

Excellent

Opinion/Reflection is at least 3 sentences long. Opinion is supported by facts from the event and/or personal experience. Questions or concerns about the event may be included. Reflection of how the current event relates to class discussion is included.
Needs some work

Opinion/Reflection is 2 sentences long. Opinion is mostly supported by facts from the event and/or personal experience. Questions or concerns about the event may be included. Reflection is poor or not included.
Unacceptable

Opinion/Reflection is less than 2 sentences. More than two of the criteria noted in standards for paragraph are missing.
Mechanics

Excellent

There are no errors in spelling or puncutation. Formal English is used. No abbreviations or IM/text messaging type language is used.
Needs some work

Some errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar are present but do not interfere with understanding. Abbreviations or IM/text messaging language used.
Unacceptable

Errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation interfere with understanding. Many abberviations or IM/text messaging language used.
Format

Excellent

Source of information is fully documented including news source, author, title of article or news story, and date. All information is posted on the class blog (or in case of technological issues, typed or neatly written and handed in) by Friday at 4pm.
Needs some work

Source is mostly documented. Information is posted on the blog or handed in by Friday at 4pm.
Unacceptable

No source information. Information is not written legibly or completely or current event assignment not turned in by Friday at 4pm. If a current event assignment is handed in late, it's not current! :)
