Title	Poor Does not examine meaning between the title and poem. Does not include predictions before reading and new meaning after reading.	Fair Examines meaning between the title and poem but does not extend beyond a basic explanation. (2-3 sentences)	Good Fully examines meaning between the title and the poem. Extends beyond a basic explanation. (3-4 sentences)	Excellent Goes beyond expectations and examines the meaning of the title in a literal and non-literal sense. Extends beyond the most basic of explanations. (5-6 sentences)
Paraphrase	Poor Does not paraphrase any part of the poem.	Fair Paraphrases a part of the poem but does not offer an analysis.	Good Includes paraphrases of parts of the poem and an indepth analysis of the paraphrases.	Excellent Paraphrases the entire poem and also parts of the poem that are important to the overall meaning. Goes beyond the literal meaning.
Connotation	Poor Does not discuss the poetic devices of the poem.	Fair Discusses few poetic devices but does not offer an indepth analysis of why they are important.	Good Fully discusses multiple poetic devices and offers an analysis of their importance.	Excellent Goes beyond the expectations and offers and in dept analysis of multiple poetic devices and their importance to the poem.
Attitude	Poor Does not discuss attitude of the poem (tone or mood).	Fair Discusses attitude, both tone and mood, but does not offer an indepth analysis of either.	Good Includes an in depth analysis, both tone and mood, of the use of attitude in the poem. Fully explains both tone and mood.	Excellent Goes beyond expectations and includes an in depth analysis of both tone and mood and its use in the poem. Gives a full explanation of both.
Shifts	Poor Does not discuss the shifts in the poem.	Fair Discusses the shifts but does not offer any analysis.	Good Includes an analysis of the use of shifts in the poem but may not be fully analyzed.	Excellent Goes beyond expectations and provides an in depth analysis of multiple shifts throughout the poem.
Theme	Poor Does not discuss the the theme of the poem.	Fair Mentions the theme of the poem but does not offer any analysis. Theme may be literal or too specific.	Good Includes an indepth analysis the theme of the poem that goes beyond the literal meaning. Theme is concise and is related to humans/the human condition.	Excellent Goes beyond expectations and includes and in depth analysis of the theme of the poem (or multiple themes). Theme goes well beyond the literal meaning and provides insight into the human condition.
Introduction	Poor Lacks one or more of the following elements: specific attention getter, logical progression of ideas, clear thesis statement.	Fair Uses a specific attention getter. Links the attention getter to the thesis through a logical progression of ideas. Ends with a thesis statement.	Good Uses specific and interesting attention getter. Links attention getter to the thesis through a logical progression of ideas. Ends with a clear thesis statement. Mentions the author and title of the piece.	Excellent Uses an interesting attention getter, the intro flows, the intro explains main topics of the analysis and ends with a clear, well-thought out thesis statement. Mentions the author and title of the piece.
Conclusion	Poor Conclusion either restates the thesis in the exact same words as the intro or does not restate it at all. Needs to be more developed. Leaves the reader feeling there should be more to the paper. Ends with one or more of the following: a question, a cliche, or brings up a new topic not discussed in the paper.	Fair Conclusion restates the thesis differently than in the introduction. Conclusion is adequately developed.
