Word Choice

Experimenting

Vocabulary is limited and words used incorrectly.
Developing

Words make sense, but don't carry much meaning. Words have no or little strength or conviction.
Effective

Good vocabulary and appears to have used a thesaurus. Words add to the meaning of the sentences and to the argument.
Strong

Powerful, engaging, convincing words. Words are accurately and precisely used for meaning and help for an effective argument.
Sentence Fluency

Experimenting

Short, choppy sentences or fragmented sentences. Often same beginnings and same lengths. No or very little use of compound sentences.
Developing

Readable and writer understands sentence structure, but too many of same beginnings and/or same lengths. Little use of compound sentences when appropriate.
Effective

Sentence vary in length and beginnings, but are more mechanical than fluid. It can be read aloud easily. Effective use of compound sentences.
Strong

Easy flow and rhythm. Strong and varied sentence structure with proper use of compound sentences when appropriate.
1st Draft/Writing Process

Experimenting

Very few notes, no 1st Draft corrections. Obviously little effort into paper.
Developing

Has notes and 1st Draft, but few corrections in revision and editing process. Does not appear to have used dictionary and thesaurus much, if at all.
Effective

Has good notes and 1st Draft, has some revision and editing that has improved paper. An effort was put into making a better final paper.
Strong

Good, thorough notes for paper, the 1st Draft has been been revised and re-worked, and editing was effectively done correctly to make for a much better paper. Good effort.
Substance of Arguments

Experimenting

No, or poor, "Thesis Statement." Hard for the reader to tell where the writer stands on the issue.
Developing

Has Thesis Statement, but argument points are very few and weak, not backed up with data, facts, or supporting evidence. Not a very convincing argument.
Effective

Good Thesis State- ment backed up with sound arguments from the writer's point-of-view, but with too few supporting data and evidence. Need more to convince me.
Strong

I'm convinced! Excellent, strong Thesis Statement backed up by data, facts, and other supporting evidence, besides the strong and reasoned opinion of writer.
