Writing Rubric
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Focus	Poor The writing is not focused. The writer may shift from idea to idea, making it difficult for the reader to follow or understand.	Fair The writing is somewhat focused. The writer includes and introduction and conclusion, but they need more information.	Good The paragraphs and writing are for the most part focused.	Excellent The paragraphs and the writing as a whole are focused.
Organization	Poor The writer's thoughts from sentence to sentence and or paragraph to paragraph do not make sense. Smooth transitions are not used. The ideas are all over the place.	Fair The writer's thought from sentence to sentence or paragraph to paragraph may not always be smooth. Needs to have a better link between ideas.	Good The writer's thought from sentence to sentence or paragraph to paragraph, for the most part, include smooth transitions.	Excellent The writer's thoughts from sentence to sentence or paragraph to paragraph are smooth and controlled.
Development of Ideas	Poor The writer has one or more ideas but does not develop them. Information is not in the writing and the reader cannot understand.	Fair The writer has tried to develop some ideas, but they still are not complete. The writer might still create gaps in their writing - missing parts to the idea.	Good The writer has attempted to develop all of the ideas in their writing. Even though some ideas may be more developed than others. There are almost no gaps in their writing.	Excellent The writer has developed each idea completely.
Voice	Poor No voice is used. The writer does not engage the reader.	Fair There are moments when voice is used. Some parts of the writing may sound like the writer.	Good The writer uses voice and engages the reader for most of the writing.	Excellent The writer uses voice and engages the reader throughout the entire writing.
Conventions	Poor Frequent errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure. This causes the writing to be unclear or difficult to read.	Fair There are errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure, but not all. The writing is somewhat difficult to read.	Good There are hardly any errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure. The writing is clear and not difficult to read.	Excellent The writer has almost no errors in spelling, capitalization, grammar, usage, and sentence structure. The writing is very easy to read and understand
