Focus	Great Theme is clearly stated and maintained throughout the essay.	Good Theme is clear and for the most part maintained throughout the essay.	Fair The theme may be clearly stated but is not maintained throughout the essay.	Poor The essay may be related to the purpose but may offer little or no focus: may be very brief, may have a major drift, or essay may be confusing.
Organization	Great Effective and consistent use of transitional strategies, logical progression of ideas from beginning to end, and an effective introduction and conclusion.	Good The essay has a recognizable organizational structure, though there may be minor flaws and some ideas may be loosely connected. adequate use of: transitional strategies, progression of ideas from beginning to end, and introduction and conclusion.	Fair The essay has an inconsistent organizational structure, and flaws are evident. There is an inconsistent use of transitional strategies, uneven progression of ideas from beginning to end, and introduction and conclusion, if present, are weak.	Poor The response has little or no discernible organizational structure with few or no transitional strategies. The introduction and/or conclusion are missing.
Elaboration of Details	Great The essay provides thorough and convincing support/evidence for the writer’s theme that includes the effective use of examples and details.	Good The essay provides adequate support/evidence for the writer’s theme that includes the use of examples and details.
