Digital Photography -- Balance 
Composition guidelines in a picture may change from picture to pictures but the craft of the image should have the following 4 rules applied always. Below is an assessment of students application of the application of these principles. All pictures will have the 4 basic rules. 1. A clearly defined subject and background. 2. A sense of balance within the frame of the picture determined by graphical weight. 3. A point of view from where the picture should be seen 4. A degree of simplicity

Rule 1: Subject and Background

The student will demonstrate skills to apply subject/background principle in various environments by taking in focus pictures that have a clear subject focus as well as clear and complimentary background in their composition.

Excellent

Photo has a clear subject and a clear background. Viewers can easily determine what intentional subject and background are immediately.
Above Average

Photo has clear subject and background the position of the camera or angle of the shot may take the attention away from subject.





Frequency
Average- Meet Requirements

Photo has a clear subject or clear background but one of the requirement may not be fully in focus. However the viewer can understand background and subject




Frequency
Poor- did not meet requirements

Photo is missing the focus of subject and background. The idea of the picture is unclear as to which subject the viewer should focus.

Rule 2: Sense of Balance

The student demonstrate tonal balance in their in their photographs by using shadows and light to present contrast and weight in their photo.

Excellent

The frame of the photo contains symmetrical graphical weight in that is demonstrated by the use of light and dark tones within the photo. The photo has a noticeable appeal because of the contrast
Above Average

The frame of the photo has symmetrical balance, the contrast of tone is present.
Average- Meet Requirements

The frame of the photo has balance, yet the photo may not be aligned straight and may need to be cropped.
Poor- did not meet requirements

There is little to no balance within the frame of the photo. There is something missing from the subject and it's relationship to the background that makes the picture balanced

Rule 3: Point of View

• The student will apply point of view rule as they make decisions as to where they should physically be position when they take a photo in order to make the photo interesting to the viewer.

Excellent

The point of view of this picture is well thought out and interesting and gives the viewer a creative look at the subject.
Above Average

The point of view of this picture is interesting and thoughtful adds to the total composition.
Average- Meet Requirements

The point of view of this pictures is thoughtful and in place.
Poor- did not meet requirements

The point of view of this picture was not consider carefully when taking this picture and could be improved.

Rule 4: Simplicity

The student will demonstrate the rule of simplicity as they frame their photos before the shot. In this application the student will arrange the subject in focus such that extra elements are not in the picture.

Excellent

This photo has exactly the elements that are purposed in the composition. There are no extra elements, excellent use of the simplicity rule.
Above Average

This photo has one extra elements and demonstrates the use of the simplicity rule
Average- Meet Requirements

This photo has more than one extra element, yet the photo is simple in arrangement and still meets the requirements for simplicity
Poor- did not meet requirements

This photo has too many elements and the subject gets lost in the unimportant details surrounding it.
