Focus	Poor Topic sentence is missing	Fair Topic sentence is adequate, but lacks an appropriate character trait.	Good Topic sentence names a trait about the character	Excellent Well developed topic sentence that engages the reader.
Word Choice	Poor The writer makes no attempt at selecting verbs or adjectives with energy.	Fair The writer uses words that are repetitive or unimaginative. Very little description is used in the piece.	Good The writer uses specific and accurate words that sometimes capture the reader's attention. Several strong descriptive words are used.	Excellent The writer uses words with precision. Word choices are descriptive and bring bring the topic to life. The writer uses words to capture the reader's imagination and enhance the piece's meaning.
Organization	Poor Rambles with little regard for organization. Lacks transition words.	Fair The organization lacks transition words and a concluding sentence.	Good There is a clear method of organization which lacks transition words. A concluding sentence is included.	Excellent There is a clear method of organization which includes transition words that make the sentences flow smoothly. There is a concluding sentence which restates the topic sentence in a different way .
Style	Poor Sentences are confusing and hard to follow.	Fair Incomplete and run-on sentences or sentences that are written with awkward wording.	Good Sentences are clear, but may lack variety in structure.	Excellent Sentences include varied structures and flow easily.
Conventions	Poor Numerous errors in grammar, conventions or mechanics. (More than 6)	Fair Many errors in grammar, conventions or mechanics. (4-6)	Good Includes some mistakes in grammar, conventions or mechanics that do not distract from understanding. (1-3)	Excellent There are no errors in grammar, conventions or mechanics.
