Students are to research their author's life, looking for events or qualities that show up in their writings. They are to use a minimum of three sources and cite correctly according to MLA format.

Approaching Standard

Student does some research, provides the author's background and some information about literature from the author's literary period. Two sources are cited.
Meeting Standard

Student does research on an author, explains the author's life in detail and provides some information about literature from the author's lifetime. Three sources are cited.
Exceeding Standard

Student does research on the author and explains the author's life in detail. The student also identifies important information about author based on their research. Three or more sources are cited.
MLA Documentation

Below Standard

There is no Works Cited and no in-test citations, or they are done incorrectly.
MLA format is not followed

Work is not typed.
Approaching Standard

Student follows some directions

There is a Works Cited, but it has numerous errors. In-Text citations are either incorrectly done or missing.
Meeting Standard

Works Cited and In-Text citations are completed for the most part, correctly. There are few errors.

Work is typed.
Exceeding Standard

MLA Format is well done. Works Cited is correct and everything that should be cited is cited correctly. Work is typed.There are no typos.
Organization and Fluency

Below Standard

Paper is disjointed and sentences are confusing.

Lacking an introduction or conclusion, or both.

Lacks transitions.
Approaching Standard

Sentences have to be reread to get meaning. Paragraphs tend to be too large or too small. An attempt at an intro and conclusion is made, but they are weak. Topic sentences are inconsistent.
Meeting Standard

Sentences flow relatively well, although they may be a bit choppy or repetitive. There is an adequate introduction and conclusion. There is an attempt at topic sentences and transitions.
Exceeding Standard

The paper flows effortlessly. Topic sentences and transitions tie information together well. The introduction and conclusion are interesting and complete.

Student has between 3-4 grammatical and mechanical errors
