Content	Poor Student does not address each part of the essay question.	Fair Student addresses each part of the question with little descriptive information.	Meets Expectations Student addresses each part of the question effectively using appropriate using descriptive information from course materials.	Exceeds Expectations Student addresses each part of the question effectively using appropriate and descriptive information from course materials. Main ideas are clear and well supported by detailed and accurate information from course materials.
Structure	Poor Student does not organize points within essay.	Fair Student organizes essay into clear paragraphs.	Meets Expectations Student organizes essay into separate paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion.	Exceeds Expectations Student organizes essay into introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion with clear opening and closing sentences in each paragraph.
Mechanics	Poor Spelling, Grammar and punctuation mistakes make essay unclear and/or unreadable.	Fair Student has several spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes, but essay is still readable and meaning is clear.	Meets Expectations Student has 2-3 run-ons/fragments and 2-3 capitalization and punctuation mistakes. Student has 2-3 spelling mistakes.	Exceeds Expectations Student has less than 2 run-ons/fragments and less than 2 capitalization and punctuation mistakes. There are fewer than 2 spelling errors.
