The thesis statement names the topic of the essay. It does not clearlt outline the main points of the essay.
Fair
The thesis statement outlines some of the main points to be discussed but does not name the topic. It needs a significant amount of work.
Poor
The thesis statement does not name the topic and does not preview what will be discussed. The thesis is weak/or not easy to identify.
Persuasive Element

Conclusion

The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader solidly understanding the author's position.

The conclusion is recognizable. The author's position is restated.

The paper does not end with author's position; therefore the conclusion does not give a solid ending to the essay.
