Format	Poor The student did not follow the correct format. The letter was not written as a formal letter and/or there were other mistakes such as the placing of the names/addresses and closing	Fair The student generally followed the basic format and the letter looked like a professional, formal letter. The letter may have had some minor errors in formatting.	Good The letter followed the correct format.
Opening	Poor The opening was not formal, may have used friendly language or wasn't not addressed to the reader.	Fair The opening followed the correct guidlines but may have used informal language.	Good The opening was properly addressed.
Main paragraph	Poor The paragraph lacked focus, statistics/facts to back up the main argument. The main argument may have been hard to discern.	Fair The main paragraph used at least 2 facts from outside sources to back up the argument being put forth.	Good The main paragraph was very well written and used 3 or moe facts/stats to back up the argument.
Closing	Poor The closing was improper or wrongly addressed.	Fair	Good The closing was properly addressed.
