Word Usage	Level Two Student’s use of vocabulary is very basic.	Level Three Student’s use of vocabulary is more telling than showing.	Level Four Student’s use of vocabulary is routine and workable.	Level Five Student’s use of vocabulary is precise, vivid, and paints a strong clear and complete picture in the reader’s mind.
Form	Level Two Poems are not written in the proper forms, ultimately diminishing the poetic value of the writer's collection.	Level Three Poems are somewhat written in the proper forms, while others stray significantly.	Level Four Poems are mostly written in the proper forms.	Level Five Poems are complete and follow their intended form.
Language Conventions Spelling, punctuation, grammar.	Level Two There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poems difficult to understand. Puncutation is used incorrectly.	Level Three The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors. Punctuation may be misused.	Level Four A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem. Punctuation is utilised when necessary.	Level Five Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is used consistently throughout the poem. Punctuation is utilised when necessary.
Effort	Level Two Student’s work lacks understanding of the assignment. Well below Year 8 expectations.	Level Three Student’s work demonstrates some understanding of the assignment. Approaching Year 8 expectations.	Level Four Student’s work demonstrates an understanding of the assignment. Meets Year 8 expectations.	Level Five Student’s work demonstrates a complete understanding of the assignment and goes beyond the requirements. Exceeds Year 8 expectations.
