Behavior and Attitude

Standard Not Met

Student is unenthusiastic and displays an unwillingness to participate in lessons. Student is unruly and rude during rehearsals. Student rarely stays in his/her seat in rehearsal
Approaching Standard

Student displays some enthusiasm and willingness to participate in lessons.
Student demonstrates some self-control during rehearsal. Student is often out of their seat in rehearsal.

Student shows average enthusiasm and self-control.
Student is respectful most of the time. Student stays in his/her seat most of the time during rehearsal.
Above Standard

Student is well behaved and attentive during class.
Student displays an enthusiastic attitude and willingness to participate in rehearsals. Student is respectful to the teacher and peers. Student is almost always remains in his/her seat during rehearsal.
Exceeding Standard

Student demonstrates model behavior and enthusiasm. Student is always respectful to the teacher and her peers. Student never gets out of his/her seat without permission.
Instrument/Hand Position

Standard Not Met

Instrument is not held in the proper playing position. Right and/or left hand position is incorrect.
Approaching Standard

Some effort is being made to hold the instrument correctly but performance is hindered by poor right or left hand and finger placement.

Hand and finger position are good but the instrument is not in the correct position to project to the audience.
Above Standard

Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position.
Exceeding Standard

Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility.
Posture

Does not attempt, nor make efforts to improve proper posture
Approaching Standard

Sits or stands with with head down, shoulders down and forward, arms resting on body, feet crossed, fully extended or not touching the floor, and back bent. Sits with back against the chair.

Sometimes sits or stands with the head down, shoulders down and forward, arms lowered but not resting on the body, feet under the chair, and back bent. Sometimes sits with back off the chair.
Above Standard

Usually sits or stands with the head up, shoulders straight, arms at the correct angle, feet on the floor, and back straight land not leaning on the chair, if sitting.
Exceeding Standard

Always Usually sits or stands with the head up, shoulders straight, arms at the correct angle, feet on the floor, and back straight land not leaning on the chair, if sitting.
Articulation/Touging

Shows a good feel for the notes in the piece but there are frequent or repeated small mistakes
in pitch.

Above Standard

Mostly correct with a few errors in pitch or rhythm.
(2-3 mistakes)
Exceeding Standard

Pitches are correct and has a quality sound for that instrument.

(1 mistake or less)
Tone Quality

Standard Not Met

Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure/grip (fulcrum) and/or no breath support. Poor posture may be evident.
Approaching Standard

Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure or better fulcrum/breath support. Posture may need improvement.

Fair use of projection and fullness of tone. There may be room for improvement in
1. posture
2. embouchure or fulcrum
3. breath support
Above Standard

Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound. Percussion grip/fulcrum is mostly correct.
Exceeding Standard

Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument. Percussion grip/fulcrum is always correct.
Accurate Rhythm

Standard Not Met

No evidence of steady pulse
Approaching Standard

Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Standard Met

Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.
Above Standard

Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.
Exceeding Standard

Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.
Musicality

Standard Not Met

Student Does not give attention to dynamics, tempo or style indications.
Approaching Standard

Rarely uses dynamics and/or follows indications of tempo or style.
Standard Met

Use of dynamics is narrow and/or playing is inconsistent in tempo or style.
Above Standard

Student displays ability to play with correct dynamics, phrasing & tempo with only minor errors.
Exceeding Standard

Student consistently plays with appropriate dynamics, phrasing & tempo.
