Spacing and Layout
Excellent work
Four to five sentences include spacing of letters, rows and words that are consistent and fairly tight throughout giving an overall unified feeling to the script. The layout complements the content and occupies the space in a balanced manner. Includes capitals at the beginning of each sentence.
Fine Work
Rows, words, and letters are spaced fairly evenly with a few mistakes that don't drastically detract from the overall design. The layout is effective allowing the quote to be easily read and understood. Includes capitals.
Work is below expectations
Rows, words and letters appear to be uneven, of varying sizes, and messy in appearance. The layout appears to be haphazard or random with little to no consideration given to the content. No capitals.
Formation of letters
Excellent work
Student held the pen at 45° angle so that the letters are thick and thin in the correct places. Letters adhere to a 0° letter slope, 4 nib widths for body, and 2 nibs for ascenders and descenders. Letters have the hallmark qualities of the Gothic hand.
Fine Work
Letters are usually thick and thin in the correct places. Letters usually adhere to a 0° letter slope, 4 nib widths for body, and 2 nibs for ascenders and descenders. Letters mostly have qualities of the Gothic hand.
Work is below expectations
Student did not hold the pen correctly so that the letters are not thick and thin in the correct places. Letters do not often follow the correct Gothic hand format.
Overall Craftsmanship
Excellent work
Presentation of the work is clean and neat with no stray marks, smudges, wrinkles or curled edges of paper.
Fine Work
A few stray marks or smudges are evident but do not greatly detract from the overall appearance of the lettering.
Work is below expectations
The amount of stray marks, smudges, or paper imperfections detracts from the overall apperance of the lettering.
