Paragraph Writing
	Excellent 4 pts	Good 3 pts	Fair 2 pts	Poor 1 pts
Topic Sentence	Excellent The topic sentence is the first sentence in the paragraph. It is a clear statement of the paragraph content.	Good The topic sentence is the last sentence in the paragraph. It gives some clarity of the overall connectivity of the sentences present.	Fair The topic sentence is not the first or last sentence in the paragraph. There is some evidence of a relevant topic connecting sentences.	Poor There is no topic sentence presented in the paragraph.
Support	Excellent Topic is supported by many specific details.	Good Topic is supported by a few specific details.	Fair Topic is supported by general statements.	Poor There is a slight attempt at support.
Organization	Excellent Paragraph has good organization, events are logically ordered, sharp sense of beginning and end.	Good Paragraph is organized, events are somewhat jumpy.	Fair Paragraph has some organization, events jump around, start and end are unclear.	Poor Paragraph not organized, events make no sense.
Word Choice	Excellent Uses grade appropriate langauage throughout writing.	Good Some use of grade appropriate language.	Fair Consistantly uses langauge at a level one grade lower.	Poor Consistantly uses language at a level two grades lower.
Format/Neatness	Excellent Word processed or typed and clean. Follows accepted standard formatting guidelines and is the requested length.	Good Legible writing, well-formed characters, and clean. Paragraph is the requested length.	Fair Legible writing, some ill-formed letters, print too small or too large. Paragraph is under the requested length.	Poor Illegible writing. Does not follow acceptable formatting guidelines. Paragraph is under the requested length.
Conventions	Excellent Writing evidences understanding of proper grammar and use of punctuation throughout. Minimal spelling errors.	Good Writing contains one or two consistant grammactical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation. Most words are spelled correctly.	Fair Many sentences are characterized by grammatical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation. Numerous simple spelling errors.	Poor Writing does not use proper grammar or punctuation. The number of spelling errors significantly detracts from the readability of the paragraph.
Timeliness	Excellent Writing handed in on time.	Good Writing handed in same day but not in class.	Fair Writing handed in up to three days late.	Poor Writing not handed in at all.
