	Level 4 4 pts	Level 3 3 pts	Level 2 2 pts	Level 1 1 pts
Capitalization	Level 4 Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word AND any other words necessary within the sentence.	Level 3 Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of a sentence. Inconsistently remembers to capitalize other words within the sentence when needed.	Level 2 Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of the sentence.	Level 1 Does not consistently remember to capitalize the first word of the sentence.
Punctuation	Level 4 Uses colons, semicolons and quotation marks appropriately.	Level 3 Adds necessary punctuation within the sentence structure.	Level 2 Consistently puts ending punctuation in writing.	Level 1 Does not consistently put ending puncuation.
Sentence Structure	Level 4 Writing sample shows use of complex sentence structure with many adjectives and adverbs appropriately used.	Level 3 Writing involves some compound sentences with a few adjectives and adverbs appropriately used.	Level 2 Most sentences are a complete simple sentence.	Level 1 Sentences are incomplete, a fragment or a run/on.
Neatness	Level 4 Good spacing is evident throughout the writing sample. Handwriting is clear, on lines with good margins.	Level 3 Few spacing errors either between words or within words. Handwriting is usually clear, on lines, and within margins. 1-2 erasures.	Level 2 Improper spacing between many words in the sentence and/or letters in the words. Handwriting often is not clear, not on lines and margins vary. Some erasures.	Level 1 Improper spacing between most words in the sentence or letters in each word. Handwriting is not clear, not on the lines, and there are many erasures.
Grammar	Level 4 100% of the words used in the sentences are correctly used.	Level 3 Sentence has subject and verb agreement with 1 error.	Level 2 Sentence has both a subject and verb with 2 or more errors in agreement.	Level 1 Missing a subject or verb.
