5 Paragraph Essay This rubric is used to help readers score an essay. *Note: The first 5 criteria of this rubric have been duplicated from the the Steck-Vaughn GED Essay.
	Fantastic Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. 10 pts	Good Reader understands writer’s ideas. 8 pts	Average Reader occasionally has difficulty understanding or following the writer’s ideas. 6 pts	Poor Reader has difficulty identifying or following the writer’s ideas. 4 pts
Response to Prompt 25 %	Fantastic Presents a clearly focused main idea that addresses prompt.	Good Uses the writing prompt to establish a main idea.	Average Addresses the prompt, though the focus may shift.	Poor Attempts to address prompt but with little or no success in establishing a focus.
Organization 25 %	Fantastic Establishes a clear and logical organization. Introdution - with thesis, 3 body paragraphs, and a strong conclusion.	Good Uses an identifiable organizational plan.	Average Shows some evidence of an organizational plan.	Poor Fails to organize ideas.
Development & Details 25 %	Fantastic Achieves coherent development with specific and relevant details and examples.	Good Has focused but occasionally uneven development; incorporates some specific detail.	Average Has some development but lacks specific details; may be limited to a listing, repetitions, or generalizations.	Poor Demonstrates little or no development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information.
Grammar 25 %	Fantastic No grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors. Proper word choice. Use of transitions.	Good One to two grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors. Minor errors in word choice. Some transitions used.	Average Three to four grammatical spelling, or punctuation errors. Three to four errors in word choice. One transitional phrase or word used.	Poor More than four grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. More than four errors in word choice. No transitionals are present.
