There is a beginning paragraph to be developed and thesis addressed.

Basic understanding of content.

Not written in third person.
LEVEL 2

Introduction attempts to address topic through a variety of following points.



May not be written consistently in the third person.
LEVEL 3

Introduction may inform reader of topic but may need work on being more specific.

Introduction is concise and introduces topic in a general but interesting way. Thesis is complex and thorough.

Written in the third person and voice is consistent throughout.
3 Body Paragrpahs

LEVEL 1

Some supporting body paragraphs. Individual paragraphs may demonstrate basic knowledge of topic but organization and coherence need to be developed. Connection to introduction may need to be revisited.
LEVEL 2

Some supporting body paragraphs. Logical sequence order but needs to be fleshed out. Thesis is referred to. Topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph followed by some detail sentences.
LEVEL 3

Three supporting body paragraphs. Well developed paragraphs presented in a logical sequence and refer/argue the thesis. Topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph followed by a min. of 3 detail sentences. Each paragraph closes with a concluding sentence.
LEVEL 4

Three supporting body paragraphs which clearly refer to and argue the thesis throughout. Logical sequence throughout the body of the paper. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence, is followed by a min. of 3 detail sentences, and ends with a concluding or "clincher" sentence. Paragraph transitions should be logical.
Conclusion

LEVEL 1

The essay has a final paragraph. May not fully conclude an end.
LEVEL 2

Conclusion apparent, but may not refer back to thesis.
LEVEL 3

Conclusion provides a summary of supporting points, but it may be wordy and/or does not restate the thesis.
LEVEL 4

Conclusion is concise and summarizes supporting points. Restates the thesis in a new/interesting way.
Overall Content

LEVEL 1

Attempts to address prompt but lacking in focus.
LEVEL 2

Has some development, but lacking in overall specifics. Tends to be repetitious or too broad.
LEVEL 3

Establishes a main idea. Has focused but sometimes uneven development. Some specifics.
LEVEL 4

Presents as clear and focused with specifics, details and examples.
Mechanics

LEVEL 1

Errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation and grammar.
LEVEL 2

Paper is spell checked. Some errors in capitalization, punctuation and grammar. Student has revised some work according to feedback from teacher and/or peer editing.
LEVEL 3

Paper is spell checked. Minimal errors are found in grammar, but do not detract from the general flow of the essay. Student has completed some revisions independent of teacher and/or peers.
LEVEL 4

Errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are not found. Student has revised some of the paper without the feedback/suggestion of the teacher. Editing has been completed with wordiness and flow in mind.
