Compare/Contrast Essay Middle School Rubric 
The purpose of this rubric is to allow the younger student to know what the expectations are for writing a comparing/contrasting essay. This can also be used for older students who lack the appropriate skills to write this type of essay.

Essay paragraphs and sentences are too short or don't make sense. There are not always thesis statements.

Essay is unreadable due to too many errors.

There is both no introduction and no conclusion. Re-Do.
Grammar

Exceeds Standard

The essay contains only 1-2 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Meets Standard

The essay contains 3-4 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Partially Meets Standard

The essay contains several errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Attempted But Doesn't Meet Standard

The essay is difficult to read due to errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation. Re-Do.
