Advanced

Weld has smooth transitions into base metal, reinforcement consistent and uniform
Proficient

Reinforcement is correct but not consistent with high and low spots in the weld.
Basic

reinforcement is acceptable in spots but not overall. inconsistent, exceeding 1/8" or not reaching flush.
Below Basic

Reinforcement profile totally unacceptable. Excessive uneven reinforcement, lack of reinforcement, poor transitions for weld metal into base metal

Appearance

Advanced

Weld shows a constant uniformity the entire length of weld coupon, smooth bead appearance, good transitions into base metal.
Proficient

Weld shows a constant bead appearance and uniformity with limited discontinuities.
Basic

Weld varies in appearance, inconsistent bead fusion.
Below Basic

Weld is unacceptable with poor fusion, width and height control. Unacceptable discontinuities.
Total Points
Weld width and height:

Advanced

Bead is uniform width and height along the entire length of each weld.
Proficient

Bead maintains width and length. Limited discontinuities.
Basic

Inconsistent width and height throughout the length of the weld.
Below Basic

Weld is inconsistent with poor bead formation throughout, lack of fusion, undercut and uniformity.

Advanced

HAZ is limited to immediate weld area, no arc strikes outside of weld area, spatter is kept to a minimum and easily removed. No grinding marks.
Proficient

HAZ is limited to weld area, no arc strikes outside of weld area, spatter is limited but not all removed.
Not properly cleaned.
Basic

HAZ excessive, large droplets of spatter not easily removed. Weld not cleaned, grinder marks visible.
Below Basic

HAZ excessive, excessive non removable spatter, not cleaned, grinder marks clearly evident, general poor bead appearance.
