Good
The student can retell the story sequentially, possibly mixing up two minor events, but can only remember either the characters, problem or the setting.
Fair
The student can retell events, but retelling may or may not be sequential. Student may give only a partial description of the characters, setting, or problem.
In Progress

Questioning
Excellent
The student can ask a question that calls for clarification of something that might be confusing in a read-aloud. This may be a question about vocabulary or meaning. The student understands the difference between a clarifying question and a question that is based on a literal recall of the text.

Clarifying
Excellent
The students identifies words that are difficult to read and pronounce. Uses phrases like, "I don't understand the part about...." Makes an effort to think about the word in context.
Good
The student gets easily frustruated by words he doesn't know, but he asks student peers for help. He uses phrases like "I don't get it" and "Help", etc.
Fair
The students realizes he/she has difficulty with certain words but appeals only to the teacher for clarification instead using clarification strategies like reading and looking for clues.
