Short writing projects
	Excellent 5 pts	Good 4.5 pts	Fair 3.5 pts	Poor 2 pts
Thoroughness 40 % Care in fully addressing the assignment	Excellent All questions fully and thoughtfully answered with exceptional development of ideas and effort to find out more about content.	Good Generally good care is taken in fully answering all aspects of the questions whether short answer or essay.	Fair Answers are answered briefly but not fully or consistently throughout assignment.	Poor Answers are one-word and incompletely addressed.
Specificity 40 % Providing particular examples fully.	Excellent Writing includes specific examples that provide insights into their ideas or points. Names of artist(s), pieces, and contexts are identified when relevant, demonstrating extra effort to find information.	Good Writing provides specific examples. Pieces or examples are discussed generally.	Fair Uneven writing on ideas: sometimes clear but often discussion falls short at providing insights or particular examples.	Poor Little or no information is given to back up answers. Or, questions are left, generally, incomplete.
Technical (see: writing about arts) 10 % Quality of writing: grammar, punctuation as well as use of citations, proper titling of work. (See “Writing about the Arts” handout.	Excellent Excellent use of writing: grammar, punctuation. Works discussed are referenced and cited properly. including proper footnotes when necessary.	Good Overall proper use of references and style. Uses full sentences, proper grammar. Titles, dates and writing elements are generally ok.	Fair Generally proper writing is employed. Art forms are discussed but writing needs some editing or proofing at times.	Poor Sloppy writing: careless mistakes, spelling, word choices or too informal for a writing assignment.
