Main Idea and Supporting Details 
Students will use two-column notes to demonstrate knowledge of main idea and supporting details while reading an article about "Leif Eriksson". The main idea and details will then be put together in a paragraph consisting of the main idea and supporting evidence. The student will include at least two to three supporting details.

Clear main idea and all important details are included. Details are in logical order. Demonstrates clear understanding of information in the text. Is characterized by paraphrasing of the main idea and significant details
Excellent

Clearly stated main idea. All details are presented in a logical order and clearly stated. Writing demonstrates a clear understanding of the article, which is conveyed to the reader using paraphrasing or correctly noted parenthetical documentation.
Grammar, Usage and Mechanics

Poor

Excessive amount of errors in spelling, numerous grammatical, and lacked correct punctuation.
Fair

6-9 spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors found throughout the writing piece.
Good

1-2 spelling errors, 1-2 grammatical errors, and 1-2 punctuation errors throughout the writing piece.
Excellent

No spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors present.
