iRubric: Literary Analysis (timed) rubric

Each paragraph starts with a clear topic sentence that clearly relates to the thesis. Details and examples fully support the main ideas and are well-developed and explained showing a thorough understanding and analysis of the topic. The paragraphs are logically organized, clearly structured and easy to understand.

Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence, but may have a weak connection to the thesis. Details and examples are included and explained with some analysis of the topic, but more depth needed. There may be some minor errors in organization and structure.

Most paragraphs start with a topic sentence, but no clear link to the thesis is made. Some details and examples are included, but not enough to fully support the main idea or are not fully explained. Organization has many errors and there is a lack of a clear structure.

Missing topic sentences and/or not enough supporting details and examples in each paragraph. Or the supporting details may be wrong. Organization is poor and the essay is hard to follow.

Wraps up the essay by restating the thesis, reviewing the main points, and leaving the reader thinking. The conclusion is creative and/or thoughtful.

Restates thesis and main points and leaves the reader with something to think about, but could be stronger.

Ends the essay with some final thoughts, but doesn't clearly restate thesis and/or main points. Additional information may be added that was not already presented in the essay. Does not end with a memorable statement.

Essay ends abruptly or the conclusion does not fit with the essay. Major components of the conclusion may be missing.
