The Writing Process This rubric grades the five steps in the writing process.
	Poor I need more work in this area. 1 pts	Fair I'm showing effort in this area but need more guidance. 2 pts	Good I have a firm grasp on this area but have minor details to work on. 3 pts	Excellent I am a rock star in this area! I'm on my way to a "4"! 4 pts
Brainstorming & Prewriting 4 pts First & Second Steps in the Writing Process	Poor Little to no time spent brainstorming, organizing and prewriting ideas for this piece of writing	Fair Some evidence that shows time spent brainstorming, orgainizing, and prewriting ideas for this piece of writing	Good Evidence shows the use of brainstorming, organizing (magnifying, graphic organizers, etc.) and prewriting ideas for this piece of writing	Excellent Detailed evidence showing time spent brainstorming, organizing (magnifying, graphic organizers, etc.) and prewriting ideas for this piece of writing.
Rough Draft 4 pts Third Step in The Writing Process	Poor Rough draft includes little to no ideas from Brainstorming & Prewriting.	Fair Rough draft includes limited ideas from Brainstorming & Prewriting. An attempt was made to include the information from steps one and two in the rough draft.	Good Rough draft includes ideas from Brainstorming & Prewriting. Evidence shows that student used steps one and two to write the rough draft.	Excellent Rough draft clearly includes ideas from Brainstorming & Prewriting. Evidence shows clear organization in writing.
Revising & Editing 4 pts Fourth Step in The Writing Process	Poor Student spent little to no time revising & editing. Little to no changes were made to piece based upon the class directions, peer edits, or student's revising goal. Numerous errors in conventions/grammar make it hard to understand the composition.	Fair Student attempted to make changes to their writing, however the changes were minimal and focused on editing verses content and description presented in writing. Frequent errors were made in conventions/grammar.	Good Student revision shows adequate changes made to content and ideas in writing. Details were added to enhance writing. Few errors were made in conventions/grammar.	Excellent Student made numerous changes to writing, changing/adding details and description to make writing more attractive to reader. Few errors were made in conventions/grammar.
Final Draft 4 pts Fifth Step in The Writing Process	Poor Final draft is incomplete, has little idea development.	Fair Final draft is complete but has very little idea development.	Good Final draft is complete and there is evidence that there was adequate effort made to develop the story.	Excellent Final draft is complete. The story was developed and had a clear beginning, middle and ending.
Participation 4 pts Use of time in class.	Poor Student frequently had to be refocused/reminded to work on the writing process. Student did not use classtime wisely.	Fair Student sometimes used classtime wisely, however, student had to be refocused and reminded to work on the writing process. Student conversations/actions focused on other topics instead of writing.	Good Student mostly used classtime wisely. The majority of the time the student was focused on the writing process and only one or two times did the student get off-task.	Excellent Student always used classtime wisely. All conversations during class were focused on the writing process.
Meachanics 4 pts Conventions Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, and Spelling	Poor Numerous errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling may hinder comprehension. Word choice is general and imprecise	Fair There are numerous errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling. Word choice is often general, vague, or imprecise.	Good There are minor errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling. Word choice is usually careful and precise.	Excellent There are few or no errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling. Word choice is consistently careful and precise.
