A thesis statement may be evident. No supporting points or details are provided.

There may be one or two supporting points: details are inadequate.
Expanding

There are supporting points, though some may be missing. Details are included, but may not fully support points.
Proficient

Student uses points which support his/her thesis statement. There are details such as facts, figures, statements from reading, etc. which support the points.
Conclusion

No conclusion is apparent in the essay.
Developing

Conclusion may be attempted, but does not summarize or restate question.
