Characters	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify the characters by name and cannot give much detail about them.	Fair Student can identify some of the main characters by name, and can give little or no details about them.	Very Good Student can identify most main characters by name and can give some detail about them.	Excellent Student can identify all main characters by name and can give specific details about them.
Setting	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify the setting.	Fair Student can identify setting with little detail.	Very Good Student can identify main settings with some details. (time or place)	Excellent Student can identify main settings with significant detail. (time and place)
Problem/Conflict	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify the problem/conflict.	Fair Student can identify a minor problem/conflict.	Very Good Student can identify more than one minor problem/conflict.	Excellent Student can identify the major problem/conflict.
Main Events	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify events in the story.	Fair Student can identify some of the events in random order.	Very Good Student can identify most of the important events in order. These are many of the minor events also, which do not have a direct impact on the resolution.	Excellent Student can identify all of the most important events in sequential order. These are the primary events that lead to the resolution.
Solution/Resolution	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify the solution/resolution.	Fair Student can identify an event that did not solve the problem.
