Needs improvement
Errors or omissions in details or content vocabulary suggest poor comprehension of subject matter. Essay may be very short or repetitive due to lack of content and comprehension.
Good
Most details support the main idea but poor follow up sentences, and/or important errors or omissions suggest some limitation in comprehension of subject matter.
Excellent
Details and follow-up sentences support or tell more about the topic. Comprehension of subject matter is clearly evident.

Needs improvement
The main idea is not totally clear from the beginning.
Sentences and/or paragraphs lack focus or are not in a logical order for the reader.
Good
Some paragraphs lack focus and/or support: the reader may loose focus on topic or fail to see importance of supporting info. Content present but not in best sequence
Excellent
The essay is written in an order that enhances reader comprehension. Paragraphs focus on one main idea and include support. Entire text is cohesive and logical
Grammar
Needs improvement
The essay contains major errors in spelling and grammar that hinder communication. This piece needs to be proofread, edited, and re-drafted.
Good
Some errors in spelling and/or grammar do not hinder the reader. Some word usage or sentence structures are awkward, repetitive, passive, or ambiguous.
Excellent
The work has been proofread and edited carefully. The diction, syntax, and style in the writing are skilled & enhance communication and comprehension.
