Sharpness and focus Purpose of essay is indicated by thesis details	Excellent Reader knows exactly the direction the essay is to take; sharpness and focus are precise.	Above Normal Thesis is focused yet inconsistently sharp; leaves many questions in the mind of the reader as to direction of essay.	Barely Adequate Thesis displays some focus but leaves other parts vague and confusing.	Needs Improvement Thesis is fuzzy and so vague and wide as to be confusing.
Clarity of essay ideas Ideas of essay present	Excellent Vocab and construction make the thesis easy to understand yet uses a sophisticated structure.	Above Normal Vocab is appropriate and specific to essay needs. Not wordy but sufficient to give direction, yet may be stilted at times.
