Relation to Topic	Extending Focuses on the topic and clearly addresses the purpose.	Proficient Is generally related to the topic and purpose.	Developing Demonstrates an awareness of the topic and purpose, but may include material only slightly related.	Emerging Is only slightly related to the topic and purpose.
Details	Extending Demonstrates thorough knowledge -uses specific, original supporting details related to the main idea.	Proficient Demonstrates basic knowledge - uses general supprting details related to the main idea.	Developing Demonstrates some knowledge - general supporting details are random with gaps that confuse the reader.	Emerging Demonstrates limited awareness - very few or no supporting details used.
Language/Vocabulary	Extending Has a mature use of language with a consistent variety of adjectives and sentence patterns. Uses details from all senses	Proficient Has language that is generally adequate with some adjectives and variety in sentences. Uses details from several senses	Developing Has limited vocabulary. Uses basic sentence structure with few or no adjectives; repetition in sentences. Organization	Extending Has a logical structure that flows naturally with a distinct beginning, middle, and end. Emerging Exhibits little or no evidence of organizational structure with a beginning, middle, and end.
