Instrument is not held in the proper playing position. Right and/or left hand position is incorrect.
Needs Improvement

Some effort is being made to hold the instrument correctly but performance is hindered by poor right or left hand and finger placement.
Satisfactory

Hand and finger position are good but the instrument is not in the correct position to project to the audience.
Good

Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position.
Clear Excellence

Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility.
Tone Quality

Unsatisfactory

Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure and or no breath support. Poor posture may be evident.
Needs Improvement

Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure or better breath support. Posture may need improvement.
Satisfactory

Fair use of projection and fullness of tone. There may be room for improvement in:
1. posture
2. embouchure
3. breath support
Good

Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.
Clear Excellence

Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.
Accurate Pitches

Unsatisfactory

No recognizable tune is present.
Needs Improvement

Many notes are incorrect - student seems unfamiliar with the tune.
Satisfactory

Shows a good feel for the notes in the piece but there are frequent or repeated small mistakes in pitch.
Good

Mostly correct with a few slips. There may be small intonation problems.
Clear Excellence

Pitches are correct and intonation is accurate.
Accurate Rhythm

Unsatisfactory

No evidence of steady pulse
Needs Improvement

Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Satisfactory

Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.
Good

Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors
Clear Excellence

Steady pulse with accurate rhythms
Dynamics/Style

Unsatisfactory

Student Does not give attention to dynamics, tempo or style indications.
Needs Improvement

Rarely uses dynamics and/or follows indications of tempo or style.
Satisfactory

Use of dynamics is narrow and/or playing is inconsistent in tempo or style.
Good

Student displays ability to play with correct dynamics, phrasing & tempo with only minor errors.
Clear Excellence

Student consistently plays with appropriate dynamics, phrasing & tempo.
Articulation

Unsatisfactory

No real attempt at articulation is being made.
Needs Improvement

Difficulty with tonguing and or slurring patterns.
Satisfactory

Student usually follows the articulation marked but there are frequent or repeated small errors.

Almost all articulation patterns are correct with only an occasional small error.
