Idea/Response
Insufficient 0
-For one or both selections, the idea is not an answer to the question asked, or no idea/answer is given.
Partly Sufficient 1
-The idea is reasonable for both selections, but is missing an explanation or is not specific enough.
-Response only considers the most literal meaning of the text.
Sufficient 2
-For both selections, the response is reasonable and goes beyond a literal meaning of the text.
Exemplary 3
-For both selections, the idea is perceptive and shows awareness of complexities of the text.
Explanation
Insufficient 0
-No explanation or idea is given from either selection, or if one is given, it does not make sense.
Partly Sufficient 1
-For one or both selections, the idea needs more explanation or needs to be more specific even though it is supported with text evidence form both selections.
Sufficient 2
-For both selections, the explanation of the response is specific enough to show that the student can make connections throughout the text and draw valid conclusions.
Exemplary 3
-The student develops a coherent explanation of the idea, making discerning connections across the text.
Text Evidence
Insufficient 0
-Sometimes the response contains only text evidence from one of both selections.
-At other times there appears to be an idea; however, this idea cannot be considered an answer to the question because it merely repeats word-for-word or "echoes," the text.
Partly Sufficient 1
For one or both selections:
-Response contains no text evidence.
-Evidence is flawed and does not adequately support the idea.
Inadequate text evidence is:
-only a general reference to the text
-too partial to support the response
-weakly linked to the response
-used inappropriately because it wrongly manipulates the meaning of the text.
Sufficient 2
-For both selections, the text evidence used to support the idea is accurate and relevant.
-For both selections, the response & text evidence used to support it are clearly linked.
Exemplary 3
-For both selections, the text evidence used to support the response is specific and well chosen.
-Overall, the evidence strongly supports the validity of the idea.
Coherence
Insufficient 0
-For one or both selections, the idea is too general, vague, or unclear to determine if it is a reasonable response.
Partly Sufficient 1
-Even though text evidence is provided
for both texts, the idea is reasonable for only one selection.
OR
-The response contains an idea and relevant text evidence for both selections, but the idea for one selection contains an inaccuracy.
Sufficient 2
-For both selections, the combination of the idea and text evidence demonstrates a good understanding of the text.
Exemplary 3
-For both selections, the combination of the response and text evidence demonstrates a deep understanding of the text.
