A model of matter and its motion
Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed. Models of solids, liquids, an gases to show that adding or removing thermal energy increases or decreases kinetic energy of the particles until a change of state occurs. (examples of models are drawing, diagrams, 3D model, diorama) Pure substances are any element or compound

Pure Substance

Poor

The pure substance used is not identified or modeled correctly.
Fair

The pure substance used is identified and modeled correctly part of the time.
Good

The pure substance used is identified and modeled correctly through out the model. An element was chosen as the pure substance.
Excellent

The pure substance used is identified and modeled correctly through out the model. A compound was chosen as the pure substance.
States of Matter

Poor

All 3 states are modeled correctly, but no other details given.
Fair

All 3 states of matter are modeled correctly. Some of the shape or volumes are labeled. Motion missing.
Good

All 3 states of matter are modeled correctly. Shape and volume are labeled correctly. Motion of particles is excluded
Excellent

All 3 states of matter are modeled with the correct structure, labeling the shape and volume of each state. The motion of the particles is described.
Thermal and Kinetic Energy

Poor

Model describes thermal energy and kinetic energy, but not how the two relate to change the phase/state of matter.
Fair

Model shows how a change in thermal energy changes the kinetic energy in a pure substance between some of the phases/states. No temperatures are given, no explanation of conservation of energy.
Good

Model shows how a change in thermal energy changes the kinetic energy of the pure substance between each phase/state. A boiling point or a melting point is given. No explanation of conservation of energy.
Excellent

Model shows how a change in thermal energy changes the kinetic energy of the pure substance between each phase/state. The boiling point and melting point for the pure substance is identified and explained. The Law of conservation of energy is explained.
