Conventions	Poor There are major errors in spelling, grammar, and paragraph structure.	Fair The story contains 10 to 13 errors in spelling, grammar, and paragraph structure.	Good The story contains 6 to 9 errors in spelling, grammar, paragraph structure.	Excellent The story contains 5 or fewer errors in spelling, grammar and paragraph structure
Sentence Structure	Poor Sentences do not make sense. There may be run-on sentences. Little sense can be made of the piece.	Fair There are many mistakes with sentence structure affecting the understanding of the writers thoughts.	Good All sentences are complete thoughts.	Excellent All sentences are complete thoughts which contain descriptive words and few errors.
Topic Sentence	Poor The writer does not have a topic sentence.	Fair The writer has a topic sentence but does not have an interesting introduction.	Good The writer has an introduction and topic sentence.	Excellent The writer has an interesting and well developed introduction and topic sentence.
Detail Sentences	Poor No detail sentence was included.	Fair One detail sentence was included.	Good Two to three detailed sentences were included.	Excellent Two to three well detailed and written sentences were included.
Concluding Sentence	Poor No concluding sentence was written.	Fair Concluding sentence did not refer back to the topic sentence.	Good Concluding sentence referred back to the topic sentence.	Excellent Concluding sentence referred back to the topic sentence in a creative way.
