Student is capable of naming the parts of the guitar with ease, able to to tune the guitar with a tuner and without assistance, and knows each open string note. Student handles the guitar with care.
Approaching

Student has some knowledge of parts of the guitar, is able to tune the guitar with a tuner and assistance, and know some of the open string note names. Student handles the guitar with some care.
Beginning

Student does not have knowledge of the different parts of the guitar, can not tune the guitar with a tuner, and does not know the note names of the open strings in standard tuning. Student does not handle the guitar with care.

Student strums too hard, too soft, or not all of the strings in the chord. Strum patterns have frequent errors or hesitation, causing student to lose time.
