	Novice 1 pts	Intermediate 3 pts	Advanced 5 pts
WHAT? (DESCRIPTION)	Novice Many key points are missed or not explained clearly.	Intermediate Writer makes some effort to summarize the key points of the reading.	Advanced Writer thoroughly summarizes the key points of the reading.
SO WHAT? (INTERPRETATION)	Novice The interpretation of reading does not demonstrate writer’s understanding of the topic. Writer does not make any connection between the reading(s), class discussion, life experiences and/or other resources (e.g., magazines, websites, articles, etc.).	Intermediate Writer attempts to interpret the reading, but it does not move beyond a description of the topic. Writer attempts to make connection between the reading(s), class discussion, life experiences and/or other resources (e.g., magazines, websites, articles, etc.).	Advanced Writer thoroughly demonstrates an ability to interpret the reading. Writer makes connections between the reading(s), class discussion, life experiences and/or other resources (e.g., magazines, websites, articles, etc.).
WHAT NEXT? (OUTCOME)	Novice Writer does not articulate what she has learned from the reading(s).	Intermediate Writer attempts to articulates what she has learned from the reading(s).	Advanced Writer articulates what she has learned from the reading(s) and/or class discussion.
ORGANIZATION	Novice Reflection lacks organization rendering the essay, too difficult to understand, and it does not meet the minimum length requirement.	Intermediate Reflection is somewhat organized and may take a re-reading to understand, but it meets the minimum length requirement.	Advanced Reflection is organized and easy to understand. It meets the minimum length requirement.
GRAMMAR, MECHANICS & SPELLING	Novice There are NUMEROUS errors in grammar, mechanics, and/or spelling. Errors prevent reader from fully understanding.	Intermediate There are SEVERAL errors in grammar, mechanics, and/or spelling. Errors sometimes interfere with understanding.	Advanced Errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation are FEW. Errors and do not interfere with understanding.
