There is a lack of either subject or predicate in the sentences. There may be run-on sentences. Little sense can be made of the piece.
Fair
There are less than 3 mistakes with sentence structure.
Good
All sentences are complete thoughts.
Excellent
All sentences are complete thoughts which contain elaboration and show a creative side - they show the writer's "voice".
Paragraph Structure
Poor
The writer does not convey any meaningful, on topic, message.
Fair
The writing is on topic, but lacks a main idea sentence and 3 or more detail sentences.
Good
The writing is on topic, but does not contain a main idea sentence.
Excellent
The main idea is presented, along with 3 or more detail sentences.
Penmanship
Poor
Little care is used with penmanship. Letters may not be correctly formed. There may be no spacing between words. There may be reversals. It is difficult, or impossible to read.
Fair
Penmanship is rather neat. There may be a few reversals, or incorrect letter formation, but still readable.
Good
Care is used with penmanship. Spacing is adequate, and the piece is easily read.
Excellent
Extreme care is used with penmanship. The piece has the look of a more mature writer.
