Criteria for Essay
	Excellent 5 points 5 pts	Good 4 points 4 pts	Fair 3 points 3 pts	Poor 1-2 points 2 pts
3 Examples	Excellent Answer is clearly supported with examples from three short stories. Insightful connections are made.	Good Answer is somewhat supported, but the support could be stronger. A few insightful connections are made.	Fair Answer is weakly supported. Fewer than three examples are used.	Poor No examples are used or examples do not clearly support answer.
Length	Excellent Essay is a full page of logical, well-written information that flows and is easy to understand.	Good Essay is a full page that is mostly well-written and is somewhat easy to understand.	Fair Essay at least half a page and is somewhat easy to understand.	Poor Essay is less than half a page and/or is not logically written and is hard to understand.
Language + Mechanics	Excellent No errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization.	Good A few minor errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization, but they do not detract from the overall meaning and effectiveness of the essay.	Fair A few errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization that, while distracting, the meaning and intent of the paragraph can still be discerned.	Poor Distracting and major errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
