Memoir Memoir Students will narrate a personal memoir. The memoir should focus on the relationship of a person/place/thing and/or relate an event that had a substantial impact on the memoirist. The memoir must include effective use of dialogue, imagery, and a reflection, as well as a compelling lead paragraph and a memorable concluding paragraph. Organization	Poor There is an absence of narrative elements or an over-emphasis on informational text. Written like an autobiography.	Fair There is some organization, but may be difficult to follow at times. Autobiographical with a spattering of narrative elements.	Satisfactory Information is organized into a narrative with paragraphs that follow a sequence; unbalanced dialogue, narration and action.	Excellent Well constructed narrative with paragraphs that follow a logical sequence; balanced dialogue, narration, and action.
Lead & Conclusion	Poor Memoir missing both lead and concluding paragraphs.	Fair Missing either lead or concluding paragraph; OR, both paragraphs were included, but did not "hook" reader AND left reader "hanging"	Satisfactory Both lead and concluding paragraphs written, but one or the other was lacking (the hook or the wrap-up)	Excellent Both lead and concluding paragraphs highly successful. Reader was "hooked" from the very beginning, and given a strong closure.
Relationship/Event	Poor The significance of the relationship/ event lacks the "So What?" Tone does not always match topic of memoir; style is occasionally stilted.	Satisfactory Tone matches topic of memoir; style is natural; some slang, but does not distract greatly.	Excellent Style is natural and flows well. Tone matches topic. Diction suits memoir, is used appropriately/ at appropriate times.
Imagery/sensory details	Poor Little or no sensory details	Fair A few sensory details but mostly limited to visual imagery	Satisfactory Imagery used effectively; reader can identify and relate to event and/or memoirist.
