Narrative Essay 
Write a narrative essay on a memory or a meaningful experience you had growing up. This should be a personal story about you and can be happy, sad, or funny. BE CREATIVE! You don’t like to read “boring” stories so take this opportunity to be an engaging author and create something original and exciting for readers!

5-Expert

Would receive a 5 on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment

Ideas

There is one controlling idea pertaining to a personal experience. Details are relevant and ideas are fully developed. The author effectively establishes a setting and develops characters through methods of direct and indirect characterization.
Organization

Clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas are grouped within paragraphs. The author uses an effective hook or engaging lead.
Style

The author demonstrates exemplary word choice, is aware of the audience, has a unique voice, and uses sensory details
Conventions

The author has typed their essay in 12 pt., Times New Roman font and has the correct title page format. The essay has few to no grammatical errors that interfere with the meaning of the piece.
4-Elite

Would receive a 4 on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment

Ideas

One controlling idea based on a personal experience, but ideas are only somewhat developed. Includes setting and both methods of characterization.
Organization

Clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas are grouped within paragraphs, but the introduction or conclusion is not as effective as it could be.
Style

The author demonstrates an above average word choice, is aware of the audience, establishes voice, and uses sensory details.
Conventions

The author did not follow all of the formatting instructions, but has few grammatical errors.
3-Novice

Would receive a 3 on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment

Ideas

Writes about a personal experience, but does not stay focused or on topic, or includes irrelevant details. Ideas are not fully developed but the essay includes setting and methods of characterization.
Organization

Clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas are somewhat grouped within paragraphs or the essay is missing an engaging lead or hook.
Style

The author uses an average word choice, but some words are repetitive. The author is aware of the audience, but doesn't establish a unique voice. Uses some sensory details.
Conventions

The author did not follow the correct formatting completely and has some grammatical errors.
2-Amateur

Would receive a 2 on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment

Ideas

Writes about a personal experience, but does not stay on the topic. Ideas are not fully developed and it is missing methods of characterization (indirect and direct) or setting.
Organization

There is no organization of ideas into paragraphs or clear beginning, middle, or end. Author does have somewhat of an engaging lead or hook.
Style

The author does not use sensory details. Word choice is very repetitive and unengaging. Little awareness of the audience and does not establish a voice.
Conventions

The author did not follow the correct formatting at all and has many grammatical errors that interfere with meaning.
1-Rookie

Would receive a 1 on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment

Has not responded to the task by writing about a personal experience. Does not include setting or methods of characterization. Ideas are not developed fully.
Organization

Does not have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. There is no organization of common ideas into paragraphs. Missing an engaging lead and conclusion.
Style

Word choice is elementary. There is no attention paid to the audience and the author does not establish a sense of voice. The author does not use sensory details.
Conventions

Has many grammatical errors that interfere with meaning. It is obvious the paper was not proofread or edited and the format given was not followed.
