Introduction has a clear and engaging introduction of topic. May Use literary devices to engage the reader. Goes beyond the ordinary or general.
Body Paragraphs

Unsatisfactory

May be fewer than three supporting paragraphs. Paragraphs may lack details or support. Topic sentences may be unclear. May go off topic.
Partially Proficient

Has attempted three supporting paragraphs. Has attempted topic sentences, but support may be vague or irrelevant May be missing closing sentences and transitions.
Proficient

Has three clear supporting paragraphs, each with a topic sentence. Contains supporting details that are relevant. Contains adequite support of the topic. Contains a closing sentence and or transition.

Has three clear, well developed supporting paragraphs. May use literary devices, and use quotes or outside sources to support topic. Contains a closing sentence and/or a transition. Goes beyond the obvious.
Conclusion Paragraph

Unsatisfactory

Conclusion may be attempted, but is unclear. It does not restate or summarize the thesis or otherwise conclude the essay for the reader.
Partially Proficient

Conclusion is attempted, but overly general or wordy. Doesn't leave the reader sure of the ending. Does not restate or summarize the thesis statement.
Proficient

Conclusion may provide the summary of support points, restate the thesis in a new way, or sums up the main idea of the essay. The reader understands that the author is finished.
Advanced

The closing was engaging and satisfying. The closing has done more than just restated the thesis statement and main points. The ending leaves the reader contemplating the topic. May use a quote, or literary device to do so.
Mechanics

Unsatisfactory

Errors are glaring and the essay is difficult to read.
Partially Proficient

There are several errors which detract from the overall meaning and flow of the essay.
Proficient

Minimal errors are found. They do not detract from the general flow of the essay.
Advanced

Errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitolization are not found.
